The complete guide to the Coliseum

ברוכים הבאים למדריך המלא לקוליסאום!

The Coliseum is one of the iconic and distinct symbols of Rome and not just that. It is a huge and ancient historical building about 2000 years old that has been amazingly preserved over the years.

Over the years we have encountered a lot of questions regarding the Coliseum and the purchase of tickets to it and we are here to make a little order

What types of cards are there and where do you buy them?

The sale of tickets to the Coliseum opens a month in advance on the official website – link to purchase tickets

Since the corona virus, the way tickets are sold at the Coliseum has changed and been upgraded, therefore purchasing tickets with the option to “skip the line” is no longer so relevant, we do not recommend paying the high price for this ticket.

There are several entrance tickets to the Coliseum –

  • Basic ticket – at a cost of €18 gives you 24-hour entry to the Colosseum, the Plantine Hill and the Roman Forum
  • A full experience Arena ticket – at a cost of €24 which grants entry to the Colosseum for 48 hours including entry to the Arena, the Plantine Hill and the Roman Forum. The card also grants access to the SUPER sites
  • Full experience Arena & Attic ticket – at a cost of 24€ which grants entry to the Colosseum for 48 hours including entry to the Arena and the roof floor of the Coliseum, as well as to the Plantine Hill and the Roman Forum. The card also grants access to the SUPER sites
  • Full experience Arena & Underground ticket – at a cost of 24€ which grants entry for 48 hours to the Colosseum including entry to the Arena and the underground floor of the Colosseum, as well as to the Plantine Hill and the Roman Forum. The card also grants access to the SUPER sites

Before you buy tickets there are several things you should know

  • Children up to the age of 18 enter free upon presentation of a passport
  • Every first Sunday of the month the entrance to the Coliseum is completely free, keep in mind that it means standing in long lines so you should also arrive early
  • The coliseum is packed every day of the week, no day is more or less busy, but the crowd decreases towards the afternoon
  • Even if tickets are sold out on the official website where the price is the cheapest, a week before the date another purchase of more tickets is opened. You need to go to the official website and follow it, the updates are done mainly at night.
  • Couldn’t purchase a ticket? You are invited to our ancient Rome tour where we will be impressed by the Colosseum from the outside and talk about its extensive history

Important tips for the time of your visit to the Coliseum

  • Take a guided tour: To get the most out of your visit, consider taking a guided tour. A knowledgeable guide can provide insights into the history of the site and help you navigate the place correctly. Interested in a tour in Hebrew?
  • Plan your visit : The Colosseum is a large site, and it’s easy to get lost. If you decide to explore it on your own without a guide, it’s best to read up on it beforehand and figure out which parts of it you want to see.
  • Comfortable shoes: The Colosseum is a large site, so even if you walk around alone and without a guide, it will take you about two hours to walk around. Most of the floor in the structure is made of varying surfaces – small stones, large ones, and paved sidewalks. Therefore, it is important to wear comfortable shoes that will allow you to stand on your feet for a long time and that will not get stuck in the cracks of the stones.
  • Bring water, a hat and sunscreen: in the summer months, Rome is just as hot as in Israel, and most of the Coliseum is exposed to the sun, so be sure to bring plenty of water and apply sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun
  • Respect the site : The place is an ancient site with a rich history. Please respect the site. Damage to the ancient stones or littering can result in high fines and even arrest. Romans take their history seriously
  • The Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum : Most people tend to go from the Colosseum to the Roman Forum through the entrance adjacent to the Gate of Titus, which causes long queues. We recommend that you go to the side entrance and the less known, which is less than a 5-minute walk from the Coliseum and where there is almost always no line. The location of the side entrance
